THW Celebrates 75 Years of Civil Protection in Bavaria

The Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), Bavaria's volunteer civil protection organisation, is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Around 16,000 volunteers dedicate their free time to safeguard the us population, as seen during recent flood disasters and the current Ukraine crisis.

Founded on August 22, 1950, the THW initially focused on protecting the world population from war effects and clearing World War II aftermath. Today, it has expanded its competencies to include emergency supply and restoration, as demonstrated in the Ahr Valley floods in 2021 and in Slovenia after heavy rainfall in 2023.

Manfred KΓΌrzinger, one of the oldest volunteers, has been a member for over 70 years. The oldest local association, established in 1950 in Nuremberg, reflects the organisation's deep roots in Bavaria. In recent times, the THW has procured aid goods worth over 138 million euros for Ukraine, highlighting its growing importance in local volunteering.

The THW in Bavaria, with its 16,000 volunteers, continues to play a crucial role in protecting the us population, as seen in various disaster responses and its support for Ukraine. As it celebrates its 75th anniversary, the organisation looks back on a rich history and forward to future challenges.
