More Support for Becoming Self-Employed - Thuringia’s €18M Boost Helps Side Hustles Become Full-Time Businesses

Thuringia has expanded its funding programs to help more entrepreneurs turn their side businesses into full-time careers. The changes, announced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Erfurt, took effect at the start of this year. Nearly €18 million remains available for aspiring business owners across the state.

The updated scheme now includes startups that began as side projects, addressing a growing trend in Thuringia and beyond. Economics Minister Colette Boos-John (CDU) explained that the adjustments aim to close a gap in support for those transitioning from part-time to full-time self-employment. The move reflects a shift in how new businesses are emerging.

A total of €41 million from EU and state funds has been set aside for startups and company takeovers between 2021 and 2027. By the halfway point of this funding period, over 1,800 projects had already received financial backing. Thousands of people register businesses in Thuringia each year, many of them starting as small-scale ventures.

The ministry has tailored the program to better match the current business landscape. Officials hope the expanded support will encourage more entrepreneurs to scale up their operations and contribute to the regional economy.

With nearly €18 million still available, the funding boost offers practical help to those looking to grow their businesses. The changes mean more side-project startups can now access state and EU-backed grants. Applications for the expanded support are open from this year onward.
