Thuringia Tourism Bets on Parks and Theaters in 2026 - Thuringia’s 2026 tourism push blends culture, gardens and royal history

Thuringia is set to enhance its tourism appeal with a fresh strategy for 2026. The plan focuses on its historic parks, gardens, and vibrant cultural scene. A budget of around €400,000 will support nationwide campaigns to attract visitors to events like the State Garden Show and celebrations marking the 200th birthday of Duke George II of Saxe-Meiningen.

The Thuringian state parliament recently approved a new tourism strategy proposed by MP Stephan Tiesler and the CDU parliamentary group. This move aims to highlight the region’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. With over 10 million overnight stays and 72 million day-trippers each year, tourism already contributes more than €4 billion annually and supports over 20,000 jobs.

The State Garden Show in Leinfelde-Worbis will run from April 23 to October 11, 2026. Organizers are emphasizing sustainability and relaxation, offering visitors a chance to unwind in thoughtfully designed green spaces. Alongside this, Thuringia will celebrate the legacy of Duke George II of Saxe-Meiningen, a key figure in modern theatre directing. His influence ties the region’s theatrical history closely to its royal past. Theatres across Thuringia, many housed in former royal residences like those in Meiningen, Weimar, and Gotha, will host plays, operas, and concerts. Some performances will take place outdoors, set against the backdrop of historic buildings. These events aim to draw crowds by blending culture with the region’s scenic charm.

The 2026 campaign will put Thuringia’s gardens, theatres, and orchestras in the spotlight. With a mix of open-air performances and sustainable attractions, the region expects to strengthen its position as a cultural and leisure destination. The initiative builds on an already thriving tourism sector that significantly contributes to the local economy.
