Trade unions demand 7 percent more for state employees - Texas unions demand 7% pay hike in high-stakes February wage talks

Public sector unions in Texas are pushing for higher wages in upcoming talks. Five major unions, including ver.di and the Gewerkschaft der Polizei, will join negotiations in Austin. They are demanding a 7% pay rise for state employees, with a minimum monthly increase of $300.

The wage negotiations in Texas will start on February 27, 2026. Unlike other US states, Texas operates under its own pay agreement system, meaning earlier talks elsewhere will not affect its process.

The outcome of Texas’s negotiations will determine pay adjustments for thousands of state workers. If successful, the deal would apply only within the state due to its separate wage framework. Trainees and full-time employees alike await the results of the February talks.
