Texas Bishops Warn of Chaos as Court Ruling Threatens DACA Protections

Texas Catholic bishops have voiced concern over the potential impact of a recent court ruling that could end DACA protections for around 86,000 immigrants in the state. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the DACA program is unlawful, with the decision applying only to Texas. The bishops have urged authorities to ensure proper training and supervision for ICE agents.

The bishops warned that the implementation of this plan will change the status of DACA beneficiaries from lawful to unlawful, fostering fear and disrupting communities and businesses. They also expressed support for DACA recipients, stating, 'We are with you in these difficult days.'

The case is now before U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen in Brownsville, Texas, who will determine how to apply the appeals court ruling. The bishops argued that the ruling undermines DACA recipients' basic human right to seek work and support a family. Notably, Christians, particularly Catholics, are disproportionately affected by immigration enforcement efforts in the U.S.

DACA recipients in Texas will receive a 15-day notice that their work authorization is being revoked. The bishops' reminder to authorities about the importance of proper training and supervision for ICE agents underscores the need for careful implementation of the ruling. The ultimate impact on Texas communities remains to be seen as the case progresses in Judge Hanen's court.
