Tampa’s Green Spine bike lane enters final construction phase for safer cycling
Tampa’s Green Spine cycle track has entered its final construction phase. The project, costing just under $1 million, aims to create a safer route for cyclists across the city. Mayor Jane Castor has called it a key priority for the local biking community.
The Green Spine is a two-way bike lane running east to west. It will connect Downtown Tampa, Ybor City, and East Tampa before ending at East 21st Street. The full track will stretch about three-and-a-half miles once completed.
Phase 2A, currently under construction, covers roughly a third of a mile. This section runs west along Cass Street to North Howard and N Rome Avenues. Most of the funding comes from a federal grant. The track includes barriers separating cyclists from motor traffic. It also links with the West Riverwalk project at two points, giving riders alternative routes. Work on this phase is set to finish by late summer 2026.
The Green Spine will offer a dedicated, protected path for cyclists in Tampa. Its completion will improve safety and connectivity for those travelling by bike. The project remains a central part of the city’s efforts to support sustainable transport.
