Syktyvkar's Museum of Communications Marks 25 Years of Tracing Region's Tech Evolution

The Museum of Communications in Syktyvkar, Russia's Republic of Komi capital, opened in 1995. Despite uncertainty about the founding institution, Rostelekom employees are credited with its creation. The museum houses over 400 exhibits, showcasing the region's communication history.

Syktyvkar's television broadcasting began in 1964, while internet development started in 1996 using dial-up technology. The first radiotransmission station was established in 1927, and the telegraph arrived in the region in 1886. The first broadband internet subscriber was connected in Syktyvkar in 2005 using ADSL technology.

The museum, supported by Rostelekom, has conducted tours for over 500 schoolchildren and students since the beginning of 2025. The history of television in the Komi ASSR began earlier, in 1958, in Vorkuta. The first post office in Ust-Syssolsk, now Syktyvkar, opened in 1830, and the first automatic telephone exchange in the Komi Republic was established in Syktyvkar in 1953.

The Museum of Communications in Syktyvkar, a testament to the region's communication evolution, has been educating visitors since its establishment. From the telegraph's arrival in 1886 to the first broadband internet connection in 2005, the museum preserves and shares the story of communication advancements in the Komi Republic.
