Surprise bus inspections in Weil am Rhein uncover 85% violations

Customs and traffic police carried out surprise bus inspections at Weil am Rhein on March 22, 2026. Between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., officers checked 17 vehicles for compliance with transport regulations. The operation revealed widespread violations among operators. Of the 17 buses inspected, 15 were charter services and two were scheduled route buses. Officers found issues in around 85 percent of the vehicles. Many lacked complete or accurate EU journey record sheets, while others had missing supplementary log entries.

One bus stood out for two serious faults: an expired tachograph and a cracked windshield. The company responsible received an immediate fine. Investigators also uncovered repeated breaches of mandatory driver rest periods. Authorities have announced further checks on commercial passenger transport later this year.

The Weil am Rhein operation highlighted ongoing compliance problems in the bus sector. With fines already issued and more inspections planned, enforcement agencies aim to tighten oversight. Operators now face closer scrutiny of their records and vehicle conditions.
