Rail Revival in Swabia - Line Ahead of Reactivation - Staudenbahn Modernization Project Moves Forward, Public Consultation Open

A public consultation is currently open for the modernization of the Staudenbahn, with residents able to review plans and submit objections until January 19, 2026. The project aims to revive a 13-kilometer railway line between Gessertshausen and Langenneufnach in Swabia, with services expected to start by late 2028.

The modernization project is estimated to cost €65 million, with up to 90% expected to come from federal subsidies. Once complete, hourly trains reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h will connect the route to Augsburg Central Station from early morning until late at night. The line could resume operations by late 2028, with construction expected to take just under two years.

The responsibility for modernizing the Gessertshauser Bahnhof depends on the specific details of the planned measures. Generally, several authorities and institutions are involved in the modernization of stations and connecting railway projects. Key players include Deutsche Bahn AG, local administration, the Eisenbahn-Bundesamt, and regional transport companies. A feasibility study for the southern section found insufficient demand, but the northern section is moving forward.
