Stadler Wins €500M Deal for 27 Next-Gen Citylink Trams in Frankfurt
The order marks a key step for the RTW project, a new transit line in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region. Each tram will carry around 360 passengers and feature barrier-free boarding at platform heights from 76 to 96 centimetres, adhering to the latest accessibility standards. Stadler’s CEO for Spain, Íñigo Parra, called the project a landmark, emphasising its innovative accessibility solutions.
Testing will begin in autumn 2028 with the first three trams. The remaining fleet will follow by autumn 2030, ready for passenger service. Beyond manufacturing, Stadler will handle long-term servicing, spare parts, and maintenance over three decades.
Knut Ringat, RMV’s managing director, described the contract as a major milestone. The trams are designed for dual operation, running on both mainline and light rail tracks, improving flexibility across the network and meeting the region's accessibility standards.
The new trams will enter service from 2030, boosting capacity and accessibility on the RTW line. Stadler’s 30-year maintenance commitment ensures long-term support for the fleet, meeting the region's accessibility standards. The project strengthens public transport in one of Germany’s busiest metropolitan regions.
