Stabbing and pepper spray erupt in chaotic Gießen street brawl

A violent clash near a betting shop in Markstraße left one man injured on Wednesday evening. Police arrived to find the scene chaotic, with most of those involved already gone. Authorities are now searching for witnesses to piece together what happened.

The altercation broke out in the early evening, drawing attention due to its intensity. Reports indicate that pepper spray was used during the confrontation. A 29-year-old man suffered a stab wound, though his injuries were not life-threatening. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses suggested up to 10 people may have been involved. By the time officers reached the scene, nearly all had fled. Investigators have yet to determine a clear motive but have not dismissed the possibility that the groups knew each other. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses or those with details can contact the Gießen Nord station on +49 641 7006-3755. The appeal follows a rise in knife-related incidents in Gießen, where recorded attacks increased by around 25% between 2021 and 2025—from 42 to 52 cases. This surge is notably higher than the state average, with only Wiesbaden seeing a steeper climb.

The injured man remains in hospital, while police continue their search for those responsible. The investigation is ongoing, with officers reviewing evidence and following up on leads. Authorities have stressed the importance of public cooperation to resolve the case.
