Staatsbibliothek Berlin to Undergo Major Renovation with New Interim Building
The Staatsbibliothek Berlin is set for a major overhaul. The interim building, to be located on Tiergartenstraße, will maintain the current library's dimensions and house several hundred workplaces, co-working spaces, event areas, and over 50,000 books. The final design will be decided in a competition, with the current facade serving as a placeholder.
The renovation, estimated to cost billions of euros, is expected to take between 12 and 15 years. gmp architects has been commissioned for the interim building's construction, set to begin in 2026. The Staatsbibliothek Berlin's recent renovation on Unter den Linden cost 470 million euros and was completed in 2020, six years later than initially planned.
The new building on Tiergartenstraße will remain permanent, serving as a home for other institutions during their renovations. Meanwhile, the Scharoun Library in Berlin's Kulturforum is also slated for modernization, with an estimated construction time of 12 to 15 years. The architectural group Kuehn Malvezzi, winners of the competition for the Scharoun Library's redesign, will also oversee the renovation and connecting building construction.
The new Staatsbibliothek Berlin building is scheduled for realization by 2026. The interim building on Tiergartenstraße will provide essential services during the extensive renovation process, ensuring the library's continuity.
