St. Wendel Hospice Breaks Ground in Bad Salzungen

St. Wendel Hospice in Bad Salzungen marked a significant milestone with a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new inpatient hospice. Around 400 guests, including comedian Markus Majowski and actress Saskia Vester as ambassadors, attended the event held on the grounds of St. Wendel Chapel. The patient care project aims to provide a dignified end-of-life experience for patients, supported by a caring community.

The groundbreaking ceremony featured 14 ceremonial shovels, nine speeches, four presentations, and an ecumenical prayer. The project management, led by Johanna Weymar, began with an anonymous €50,000 donation, which served as the initial impetus. Ina Kastorf, who later became the managing director, initially volunteered for the first five months. The hospice plans to offer twelve inpatient beds, eight day hospice places, and four overnight hospice beds by 2027. The project requires around €7 million, with €1.1 million already raised through donations. The St. Wendel Foundation has transferred the land to St. Wendel gGmbH on a hereditary lease.

The new inpatient hospice in Bad Salzungen aims to provide a loving and comfortable environment for patients in their final days. With the support of volunteers, businesses, politicians, and the church, the patient care project is well on its way to becoming a reality. The identity of the anonymous donor who kickstarted the project with a €50,000 donation remains unknown.
