Spain's Income Gap: Pozuelo de Alarcón Tops at €88,011, Benamargosa Bottoms at €13,831
A recent report by the Spanish Tax Agency has revealed significant disparities in average gross incomes across Spanish municipalities. While some areas boast high earnings, others struggle with lower incomes.
Pozuelo de Alarcón, in Madrid, tops the list with an average gross income of €88,011, far surpassing Aigües in Alicante, which has the second-highest average at €60,883. This makes Aigües the richest municipality in the Valencian Community and the eighth wealthiest in Spain, outranking several cities in Madrid and Barcelona.
At the other end of the spectrum, Benamargosa in Málaga has the lowest average gross income in Spain, at €13,831. Other municipalities with lower incomes include Venta del Moro in Valencia (€17,861), Hondón de los Frailes in Alicante (€18,806), and Vilafranca del Cid in Castellón (€20,951).
The global figure for each locality can be skewed by a few residents with very high income levels in a small census. The report does not include data from the Basque Country and Navarre due to their own fiscal regime.
The report highlights the stark income differences across Spain, with Pozuelo de Alarcón and Aigües at the top and Benamargosa, Venta del Moro, Hondón de los Frailes, and Vilafranca del Cid at the bottom. These findings can guide policy discussions on regional economic disparities and social welfare.
