South Korea and China unite to crack down on counterfeit goods

South Korea and China have stepped up efforts to combat counterfeit goods. After signing a cooperation agreement last month, both countries recently held high-level talks in Beijing. The discussions focused on stronger intellectual property (IP) enforcement and shared strategies against fake products.

On 7 June 2023, customs authorities from Korea and China met in Beijing to address IP violations. They agreed on 10 specific measures targeting counterfeit goods in key industries: pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, electronics, and luxury items.

The two sides also decided to raise working-level consultations to director general-level talks. This upgrade aims to speed up decision-making on enforcement actions. China committed to sharing results of its crackdowns with Seoul, while Korea plans to improve detection by identifying fake goods earlier and halting customs clearance when needed.

A follow-up session will take place in Korea during an upcoming visit by Chinese officials. The meeting builds on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last month, which formalised deeper IP cooperation between the nations.

The agreement strengthens cross-border enforcement against counterfeit goods. Korea will implement stricter customs checks, while China will provide enforcement updates. Both countries now aim to tackle IP violations more effectively in high-risk sectors.
