Vehicles Stuck and Overturned Trucks - Snowstorm shuts down three major motorways in Hesse after lorries crash

Heavy snow has brought chaos to motorways in eastern Hesse, forcing full closures on three major routes. The A4, A5, and A7 are all blocked in both directions after lorries jackknifed or skidded off the roads. Emergency teams are now racing to clear the stranded vehicles and reopen the routes.

In a separate incident, four children threw snowballs from a bridge onto the A643 near Wiesbaden, smashing a driver’s windshield.

The closures began when multiple lorries became stuck or overturned due to icy conditions. On the A4, four articulated trucks are buried off the carriageway near Kirchheim interchange, while another lorry flipped onto its side on the A7 between Homberg and Bad Hersfeld. A third lorry skidded off the A5 close to Hattenbach interchange.

Police have shut the A4 between Kirchheim and Friedewald, the A5 between Hattenbach and Alsfeld East, and the A7 between Homberg and Bad Hersfeld. Two minor injuries were reported: a driver hurt in a three-vehicle crash near Schlitz and the lorry driver whose vehicle overturned on the A7. Snowploughs and crews from the Technical Relief Agency (THW) are focusing first on clearing the A4. Police are coordinating the operation but warn that reopening times will depend on weather conditions and how quickly the stranded lorries can be moved. Meanwhile, on the A643 between Wiesbaden and Mainz, four children aged 12 and 13 threw snowballs from a bridge, cracking a car’s windshield. The driver was unharmed, but police are investigating the incident.

The motorway closures have caused long tailbacks, with delays expected to last until crews can fully clear the routes. Emergency services continue to work in difficult conditions, while police urge drivers to avoid the affected areas. The children involved in the snowball incident may face consequences for endangering road users.
