Sniffer dogs uncover €110,000 in hidden cash across Lower Saxony

Two specialised dogs from the Osnabrück Police Directorate have uncovered more than €110,000 in hidden cash during recent operations. The animals, trained to sniff out banknotes, belong to a wider unit of nine such dogs working across Lower Saxony. Their latest finds include stashes hidden in everyday objects like vases and nightstands.

The police in Lower Saxony first began training narcotics dogs to detect banknotes in 2014. The reason was simple: traces of drugs often cling to cash, making it easier for the animals to track. Today, four police directorates in the region—Osnabrück, Braunschweig, Hannover and Lüneburg—use these skilled dogs.

The Osnabrück unit currently deploys nine banknote detection dogs, including Cody and Habbo. Cody, in service since 2020, has already sniffed out over €400,000 in his career. His recent successes include €24,250 hidden inside a vase during a May 12 search in Rhauderfehn. Just weeks later, on June 5, he located €70,000 in a storage room and another €10,500 inside a safe in Meppen.

Habbo, the other dog, made his own discovery on May 15 in Aurich. During an operation, he found €5,000 concealed in a nightstand. Together, these dogs have helped recover over half a million euros in recent years.

Their training allows them to detect even the smallest hiding spots. Whether tucked inside furniture or hidden behind walls, the cash rarely escapes their sharp noses.

The work of Cody and Habbo highlights the effectiveness of banknote detection dogs in uncovering hidden money. With nine such animals in Osnabrück alone, police operations continue to benefit from their precision. The recovered funds often play a key role in criminal investigations across the region.
