‘Shock calls’ scam drains elderly victims with fake medical emergencies

Police have issued a warning about a rising scam targeting older people in the region. Fraudsters are making so-called 'shock calls', pretending to be doctors who demand urgent money for fake medical emergencies. At least one victim in Weiterstadt-Gräfenhausen has already fallen for the trick and handed over cash.

The scam came to light on April 23 after multiple suspicious phone calls were reported. Callers claimed a relative had cancer and needed immediate funds for treatment. By fabricating a medical crisis, they pressured victims into transferring money quickly.

A suspect linked to the scheme has been described by authorities. He is a slim man, around 1.60 to 1.65 metres tall, and was last seen wearing a woolen hat, dark sunglasses, a sweater, and dark blue pants. Despite searches, no sightings of this individual have been reported in the Wingertstraße area. Police are urging the public to stay alert. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up at once, refuse to comply with demands, and contact the authorities immediately.

The fraudulent calls continue to target vulnerable individuals, particularly older residents. Authorities have confirmed at least one victim lost money after a 'shock call'. Residents are reminded to verify any urgent requests for funds and report suspicious activity to the police without delay.
