SCION Technology Expands Globally for Secure, Resilient Internet Connections
A new internet technology called SCION is set to expand globally after proving its worth in Switzerland's financial and healthcare sectors. Developed at ETH Zurich, the system promises greater security and control over data traffic, even during network failures. Now, telecoms provider BICS is teaming up with Anapaya to roll out the technology worldwide.
SCION, short for Scalability, Control, and Isolation On Next-generation networks, was created to address weaknesses in traditional internet routing. It ensures data keeps flowing even if parts of the network fail. Cryptographic protections also stop attackers from hijacking or redirecting traffic.
In Switzerland, SCION already underpins critical infrastructure. Over 300 banks rely on it through the Secure Swiss Finance Network for interbank communication. The healthcare sector also uses the technology, with more than 30,000 doctors connected via the SecureSwiss Health Network. One key advantage is that organizations can control exactly where their data travels, preventing domestic traffic from accidentally crossing borders.
BICS, a division of Proximus Global, specializes in global connectivity for voice, messaging, data, 5G, and IoT services. The company has now partnered with Anapaya to integrate SCION into its international backbone. The first deployment points will be in Belgium, France, Singapore, and the United States.
Yaunese Aazibou, CTO at Proximus Global, called SCION a fundamental change in how the internet is designed and trusted. While its use outside Switzerland remains limitedâprimarily in financeâProximus aims to make it the standard for secure cross-border connections in critical sectors.
The global rollout of SCION will begin with key hubs in Europe, Asia, and North America. Financial institutions and healthcare providers may benefit first from its resilience and security features. For now, Switzerland remains the only country with large-scale SCION networks in operation.
