Scammers and burglars strike Wetzlar as police warn of rising doorstep fraud

A series of scams and burglaries have put residents in the Wetzlar and Lahnau areas on high alert. In recent weeks, con artists and thieves have targeted homes using clever tricks, while police warn of ongoing risks. Meanwhile, a repeat offender was caught driving without a licence on a nearby motorway.

In Wetzlar, two scammers posed as telephone company employees to enter an elderly woman's apartment. Once inside, they searched for valuables but left empty-handed. The pair—a man and a woman—were described in detail. The man stood around 170 cm tall, with a slim build, darker skin, a mustache, and wore a hooded jacket with fur trim. The woman appeared stocky, in her 30s, with short hair and jeans.

In Dorlar, a burglar broke into a ground-floor flat between 4:00 PM and 7:30 PM. The thief smashed a window, ransacked the rooms, and stole jewellery before fleeing. Police are now asking anyone with information to come forward.

Scammers in the region often use three main tactics: faking emergencies, pretending to be officials, or claiming a personal link to victims. Common tricks include the 'Glass of Water' ploy, the 'Pen and Paper' distraction, or dropping off fake gifts. Authorities urge residents to verify visitors, refuse entry to strangers, and always demand official ID.

Separately, a 28-year-old man from Herborn was caught driving without a licence for the tenth time on the A45 near Wetzlar/Aßlar. No further details about his case have been released.

While fraud attempts are known to occur, exact figures for deception-related crimes in the area remain unclear. Neither local police nor the LKA Hessen provide specific breakdowns for this category over the past year.

Police continue to investigate the Dorlar burglary and the Wetzlar scam, with appeals for witness statements. Residents are reminded to stay vigilant against doorstep fraud and report suspicious activity immediately. The repeat driving offence also highlights ongoing enforcement challenges in the region.
