Saxony-Anhalt's Municipal Debt Surges by 13.2% by June 2025
The financial situation of municipalities and associations across Saxony-Anhalt has seen a significant shift by June 30, 2025. The debt of these entities has risen substantially, with varying impacts on different types of municipalities and districts.
Overall, the debt of municipalities and associations affiliated with the counties increased by 6.7% or 86 million euros to 1.374 million euros. This rise was driven by investment-related debt, which surged by 21.6% or 148 million euros. Meanwhile, debt for liquidity purposes rose by 4.6% or 24 million euros. The districts in Saxony-Anhalt experienced a notable increase in liquidity loans, with the core budgets' debt rising by 22.5% to 822 million euros. Almost half of this increase was attributed to the Mansfeld-SΓΌdharz district, which saw a rise of 71 million euros or 49.5%.
For independent cities, the debt increased by 15.0% or 179 million euros, with investment-related debt leading the way, up by 21.6% or 148 million euros. Debt for liquidity purposes rose by 5.9% or 30 million euros in the same period. The debt of the core budgets of the counties also increased significantly, by 22.5% to 822 million euros, an increase of 151 million euros from the previous year.
By the end of the first half of 2025, the debt of the core budgets of the state of Saxony-Anhalt stood at 3.574 million euros, an increase of 416 million euros or 13.2% from the previous year. This substantial rise in debt across various municipalities and districts in Saxony-Anhalt highlights the need for careful financial management and planning in the coming months.
