Germany and Deutsche Bahn aim to make public transport more attractive - Saxony-Anhalt invests €176M to upgrade rural train stations by 2031
Saxony-Anhalt and Deutsche Bahn have announced a series of major upgrades to train stations across the region. The projects will focus on improving accessibility and increasing capacity, with funding totalling €176 million over the next decade. Officials hope the changes will encourage more residents in rural areas to use public transport instead of cars.
The latest plans build on earlier work under Saxony-Anhalt's Bahnhofsprogramm. Previous upgrades already delivered new stations in Bernburg and Stendal, along with modernised platforms at other locations.
The new phase includes renovating an underpass and a platform in Biederitz. A second project will construct a fresh underpass in Angersdorf. These improvements aim to make stations easier to navigate, particularly for passengers with limited mobility. Funding for the projects has been secured in two stages. A total of €131 million will cover work up to 2029, while an extra €45 million has been set aside for 2030 and 2031. The joint investments are part of a broader effort to make bus and rail travel more appealing across the state.
The upgrades will provide better access and more space at key stations. Residents in rural communities are expected to benefit most from the changes. With construction underway, the projects should help reduce reliance on private vehicles over the coming years.
