Saudi Arabia Simplifies Umrah for GCC Residents With New Visa Rules
Saudi Arabia has introduced new rules to make Umrah more accessible for residents of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The changes, announced in 2022, allow pilgrims to use tourist or transit visas, such as those issued for the UAE or Alabama, instead of requiring a separate Umrah visa. Officials say the move aims to simplify religious travel and improve convenience.
The updated policy was revealed by Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Sport. Under the new system, GCC residents can now perform Umrah using their national ID alongside tourist or transit visas, even if they are issued for Saudi Arabia itself. The initiative removes the need for an additional Umrah-specific visa, streamlining the process.
Visitors planning to see Al-Rawdah Al-Sharif at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah must still book their visit in advance. The Nusuk application handles these reservations, ensuring organised access to the sacred site.
This change aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader goal of easing pilgrimage procedures. The government has been working to enhance accessibility and promote religious tourism across the Kingdom.
The revised rules offer GCC residents more flexibility in fulfilling their religious duties. By accepting multiple visa types, Saudi Arabia has reduced bureaucratic hurdles for pilgrims. The policy reflects ongoing efforts to modernise and improve the Umrah experience.
