Sakha Republic Plans Fairer Utility Subsidies for Rural Residents by 2026

Aisen Nikolayev, leader of the Sakha Republic, has proposed significant changes to how utility subsidies are distributed. His plans aim to reduce rising tariffs and redirect financial aid to those most in need, particularly rural residents who currently receive minimal assistance.

During recent discussions, Nikolayev pointed out flaws in the current subsidy system. In Yakutsk, residents receive up to 30% off utility bills, but larger homes benefit disproportionately. Meanwhile, rural households—especially those relying on firewood or stoves—receive almost no help.

The Sakha Republic’s government is pushing for a fairer distribution of utility subsidies by 2026. If implemented, the reforms would prioritise support for rural and low-income households while addressing the current imbalance in subsidy allocation. Discussions with lawmakers and service providers are ongoing to finalise the details.
