Sahara refund portal returns ₹8,400 crore to 4 million depositors under Supreme Court oversight

A refund portal for Sahara Group depositors launched in July 2023, allowing claims to be submitted online. Since then, over Rs 8,400 crore has been returned to nearly 4 million verified depositors. The process is overseen by a former Supreme Court judge and a senior advocate to ensure transparency.

The CRCS-Sahara refund portal went live on July 18, 2023, enabling depositors to file claims for their stuck investments. Refunds are sent directly to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts, with each genuine claimant eligible for up to Rs 50,000.

By January 20, 2026, a total of Rs 8,429.42 crore had been disbursed to 39,46,550 depositors. The highest refunds went to Uttar Pradesh, where Rs 2,228.27 crore was returned. Bihar followed with Rs 1,892.89 crore, while Jharkhand received Rs 847.67 crore.

The Supreme Court had earlier directed an additional Rs 5,000 crore to be transferred for refunds by December 31, 2026. The entire disbursement process is monitored by Justice R. Subhash Reddy, a retired Supreme Court judge, and advocate Gaurav Agarwal.

The refund process continues under strict judicial oversight, with payments being made in phases. Depositors who have submitted verified claims receive funds directly in their bank accounts. The Supreme Court's deadline for the additional Rs 5,000 crore transfer remains set for December 2026.
