S-Bahn & Regional Train Punctuality Drops in Rhine-Main Region

The punctuality of S-bahn and trains in the Rhine-Main region has taken a dip. While last year 87.8% of S-bahn trains and 84.7% of regional trains were on time, these figures have dropped to 86.1% and 84.0% respectively by the end of June 2025. Construction sites are the primary culprit behind this decline.

The reliability of these trains has also suffered, with more than one in ten trains now cancelled. Some lines, like S8 and S9, have performed particularly poorly, while S3 has shown above-average performance.

Delays and cancellations in regional rail traffic around Frankfurt have increased. However, the renovation of the Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim has brought some relief. Completed in 2024, this project has led to a significant reduction in infrastructure-related disruptions and improved punctuality on the line, with local transport punctuality improving from 68% to 81% by the beginning of June 2025.

Despite these improvements, the railway tunnel between Frankfurt and Offenbach will be closed during the summer holidays due to construction. This will affect S1, S2, S8, and S9 lines.

The decrease in punctuality of S-bahn and regional trains in the Rhine-Main region is concerning. While the renovation of the Riedbahn has brought some improvements, the upcoming closure of the Frankfurt-Offenbach tunnel will likely cause further disruptions. Efforts to minimise these impacts and restore punctuality are crucial.
