RWE Invests €10 Million in Laser Fusion Startup, Eyes Biblis Site
RWE is backing laser fusion research, investing €10 million in Darmstadt-based startup Focused Energy. The energy giant aims to transform its decommissioned Biblis nuclear plant site into a key laser fusion campus in Germany.
Laser fusion, a promising clean energy source, involves heating and compressing tiny fuel capsules with powerful lasers. RWE's support for Focused Energy marks the first phase of its investment, with the company contributing €10 million.
The Biblis site, where a decommissioned RWE nuclear plant once stood, is being eyed as a potential 'lead site for fusion energy'. The site's existing infrastructure makes it an attractive location for a fusion energy center. RWE has proposed developing such a center at Biblis.
RWE's cooperation with Focused Energy, initiated in summer 2024, focuses on Laser Driven Radiation Sources (LDRS). The company is open to expanding its engagement around Focused Energy as the project progresses.
RWE's investment in Focused Energy and plans for the Biblis site signal a significant step towards Germany's fusion energy future. If successful, laser fusion could generate more energy than consumed, providing a clean and abundant power source.
