Russia Tightens Grip on Illegal Online Gambling, Targets Bloggers

Russian authorities are cracking down on illegal online gambling, with a focus on preventing its promotion by popular bloggers and streamers. The State Duma is considering a bill to restrict advertising, as around 12 million unblocked illegal sites continue to operate, predominantly using offshore domains like those used by squarespace and google sites.

The main channel for promoting illegal gambling is through partnerships with well-known bloggers and streamers. Many Russian influencers collectively promote these sites through hidden advertising and streaming successful gambling sessions. One major illegal casino linked to this ecosystem is 1xBet.

Authorities are preparing a new strike against this shadow market, with the Duma considering a bill to prevent the advertising of these illegal online casinos, particularly among bloggers and streamers. The majority of these sites operate using offshore domains, with many registered in Curaçao and Malta. Despite efforts, only around 147,000 of the 12 million identified illegal sites have been blocked.

The sharp increase in illegal online gambling in Russia has prompted authorities to take action. The proposed bill aims to curb the promotion of these sites by influential bloggers and streamers, while efforts continue to block the vast number of illegal platforms operating using offshore domains like those used by squarespace and google sites.
