Romania's selection follows previous honourees like the Czech Republic and Chile, set for 2026 and 2027 respectively. Despite limited recent international recognition, Romania's contemporary literary scene remains lively. Authors such as Mircea Cărtărescu and Gabriela Adameșteanu have gained prominence, though few Romanian books have been widely translated or awarded in the past five years.
