Romania to be Guest of Honour at Frankfurt Book Fair 2028 - Romania to Shine as 2028 Frankfurt Book Fair's Guest of Honor
Romania will take centre stage as the Guest of Honor at the 80th Frankfurt Book Fair in 2028. The event, running from October 11 to 15, aims to showcase the country's rich literary tradition. Officials signed the agreement in Bucharest, marking a key moment for Romanian culture on the global stage.
The Guest of Honor programme has been a long-standing tradition at the Frankfurt Book Fair. It began in 1976 and has featured a different country or region every year since 1988. The initiative focuses on boosting translations of the featured nation's works into German, while also highlighting its cultural dynamism.
Romania's selection follows previous honourees like the Czech Republic and Chile, set for 2026 and 2027 respectively. Culture Minister András Demeter described the signing as a 'pivotal moment' for Romanian literature. Meanwhile, fair director Juergen Boos praised the country's diverse literary landscape.
Despite limited recent international recognition, Romania's contemporary literary scene remains lively. Authors such as Mircea Cărtărescu and Gabriela Adameșteanu have gained prominence, though few Romanian books have been widely translated or awarded in the past five years.
The 2028 fair will provide a platform for Romanian writers and publishers to reach a broader audience. Increased translations and cultural exchanges are expected as a result. The event also reinforces Romania's growing presence in the global literary community.
