Punjab Power Sector in Turmoil as Unions Protest Asset Sales

Punjab's power sector is in turmoil as unions and employees protest against the government's plans to sell off assets and lands. An emergency meeting and a demonstration have been held to oppose these moves, while the government is pushing ahead with auction preparations.

The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) employees' unions have convened an emergency meeting to discuss and oppose the sale of PSPCL and PSTCL assets. Meanwhile, a protest demonstration was held in front of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) head office against the government's attempt to sell power sector lands.

The government has held two meetings to identify and evaluate properties for auction. Officials from various departments have been involved in this process. Properties slated for auction include prime locations like the Old Bus Stand in Patiala and PSPCL properties in Ludhiana, among others in Mohali and Ludhiana. The Punjab government is planning to auction these vacant and unutilized government lands in phases.

PSPCL employees' unions have expressed their opposition to the auction of power utility properties and plan further protests against the move. In response, the government is re-evaluating the price at which these properties will be auctioned.

The power sector unions' opposition to the sale of assets and lands continues, with protests planned to prevent these moves. The government, however, is proceeding with auction preparations, with a re-evaluation of property prices underway.
