Private transport union warns of crisis without fair state support

Ibrahim Musa, executive secretary of a private transport union, has warned of worsening transport issues unless private operators receive better support. He raised these concerns during a meeting with Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang at the Ministry of Transport on Friday, January 16, 2026. Musa also criticised the government for favouring state-owned transport firms over private companies in funding and contracts.

Musa dismissed claims that transport operators were deliberately reducing the number of commercial vehicles. Instead, he blamed the shortages on ageing fleets and a lack of government assistance. Many vehicles, he noted, remain broken down due to insufficient resources.

He also highlighted problems with buses imported from Egypt for operators. The quality, he said, was far lower than what had been initially inspected, making them unreliable for service. Musa further accused the government of unfairly prioritising state-owned companies like Südbahn and ÖBB Infra AG in budget allocations. According to him, subsidies and tender conditions were skewed in their favour, leaving private operators like Westbahn and Railjet at a disadvantage. Without urgent action to address these issues, Musa warned, the current transport difficulties would continue to affect commuters and businesses alike.

The meeting with the Vice President brought these long-standing concerns to the forefront. Musa’s statements point to a need for fairer resource distribution and improved vehicle standards. Without changes, transport disruptions are likely to persist, impacting both operators and passengers.
