Police probe two illegal asbestos dumping cases in Hesse forests

Two separate cases of illegal asbestos dumping have been reported in forests near Leun and Siegbach-Tringenstein. Police are now investigating whether the incidents are linked. Meanwhile, a hit-and-run in Wetzlar left a parked car with €300 in damage after the driver fled without leaving contact details.

On March 7, 2026, a driver in a Nissan Navara pickup truck dumped asbestos panels in a forest near Siegbach-Tringenstein at around 9:15 AM. Six days later, on March 13, another set of asbestos waste was discovered in Leun. Authorities suspect the material may have come from old construction sites, as asbestos was widely used in building materials until its ban in 1993. The fibres released when disturbed can cause serious health risks, including cancer.

Police have asked for witnesses to come forward, particularly regarding the Leun incident, where no suspect has yet been identified. Over the past five years, 12 cases of illegal asbestos disposal were recorded in the Lahn-Dill and Marburg-Biedenkopf districts, with seven in Lahn-Dill alone. In an unrelated incident, a Mercedes parked on Wetzlar's Hausertor car park was damaged over the weekend. The driver responsible left a note claiming the damage was minor, but it vanished before the owner could see it. The estimated repair cost is around €300.

The asbestos dumping cases remain under investigation, with police examining possible connections between the two sites. Anyone with information about the Nissan Navara or the Leun incident is urged to contact authorities. The hit-and-run in Wetzlar, meanwhile, leaves the vehicle owner facing unexpected repair costs after the driver's note disappeared.
