Police crack down on drunk drivers during Carnival cruise chaos

Police carried out large-scale traffic checks during Weiberfastnacht celebrations on Thursday evening. The operation targeted drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs across several municipalities. A total of 201 vehicles and 274 individuals were inspected in the process.

The controls focused on registered Carnival cruises, with officers paying close attention to impaired driving. Preliminary tests revealed three drivers positive for alcohol or drugs, who were then required to give blood samples. These individuals now face criminal proceedings.

Beyond impairment offences, authorities documented multiple traffic violations. Two vehicles were deemed unroadworthy due to serious defects, leading to the revocation of their roadworthiness certificates. Other breaches were also recorded during the operation.

Officials stressed the risks of driving while intoxicated, noting that alcohol and drugs severely reduce reaction times and heighten cruise risks. They reminded drivers of their responsibility to stay sober behind the wheel.

The intensified checks will remain in place to uphold road safety during the Carnival season. Drivers are being urged to avoid alcohol and drugs entirely before getting behind the wheel. Authorities have made it clear that further violations will result in strict penalties.
