Police Conference in Offenbach Examines Yugoslav Wars’ Lasting Impact on Communities

A professional conference on the legacy of the Yugoslav Wars took place in Offenbach on November 21, 2025. Organised by the Southeast Hesse Police Headquarters, the event marked the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Agreement. Its focus was on the Bosnian War and the Srebrenica genocide, aiming to deepen understanding among officers working with affected communities.

The conference brought together experts, survivors, and law enforcement to discuss the lasting impact of the conflicts. Dr. habil. Thorsten Gromes from PRIF and Prof. Dr. Armina Omerika of Goethe University Frankfurt delivered key presentations. They explored how the wars continue to shape lives, particularly among the many residents in Offenbach with roots in the former Yugoslavia.

The conference reinforced the importance of understanding the Yugoslav Wars’ legacy for effective policing. Officers gained insights into the lived realities of affected communities, which will inform their approach to trust-building and conflict resolution. The event also strengthened ties between law enforcement and diverse groups in the region.
