Plauen shuts Gneisenaustraße for six months of urgent sewer upgrades

Plauen has announced a major road closure on Gneisenaustraße for essential sewer upgrades. Starting November 17, 2024, the affected section—between Yorckstraße and Westendstraße—will remain shut until late April 2025. The city’s utility provider, ELW, is leading the urgent works.

The closure marks the latest phase of ongoing construction in the area. Earlier this year, from March 17, crews began laying gas, water, and district heating lines along Gneisenaustraße. That project first covered the stretch between Widderstraße and Schellingstraße (including Kantstraße), lasting until the end of August. The second stage, from Schellingstraße to Elisabethstraße, will continue until December 2024.

During the upcoming sewer works, drivers and cyclists must follow designated detours. Pedestrians, however, can still use the street as normal. City officials have urged motorists to check live traffic updates and consider public transport to avoid delays. Authorities have asked residents to remain patient, acknowledging the disruption caused by the extended construction timeline.

The full closure runs from mid-November 2024 to late April 2025. ELW’s sewer renewal aims to modernise infrastructure, but commuters will need to adjust travel plans. Further updates on traffic changes will be provided as work progresses.
