Pfeffenhausen Secures €84M for Groundbreaking Hydrogen Innovation Hub
Pfeffenhausen has taken a major step forward in hydrogen technology after receiving official funding approvals for its new Hydrogen Technology and Application Center (WTAZ). On February 10, 2026, Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder formally handed over the financial backing, securing €54 million from the federal government and up to €30 million from the Free State of Bavaria. The center will focus on testing, inspection, and certification for hydrogen-powered systems, particularly supporting small and medium-sized businesses.
The WTAZ was chosen as one of four locations nationwide for an Innovation and Technology Center for Hydrogen after a competitive tender in September 2021. Alongside Pfeffenhausen, Chemnitz and Norddeutschland were also selected for similar projects. The facility will specialise in hydrogen propulsion and refuelling technologies, covering liquid, cryocompressed, and gaseous hydrogen.
Funding will be split across different areas. A total of €22 million will go to two business consortia responsible for constructing a hydrogen-capable test hall and a liquefier. Another €32 million has been allocated to three regional universities to establish testing and research facilities. The hydrogen supply for the WTAZ test hall will come from a five-megawatt electrolyzer operated by Hy2B Wasserstoff GmbH.
The municipality of Pfeffenhausen is now preparing to market commercial plots around the WTAZ later this year. The move aims to attract businesses looking to benefit from the center's infrastructure and expertise.
With funding now secured, the WTAZ is set to become a key hub for hydrogen innovation in Bavaria. The center will provide essential testing and certification services, helping businesses develop and refine hydrogen technologies. Construction and research activities are expected to progress in the coming months, with the municipality also pushing ahead with plans to expand the surrounding commercial area.
