Penang Deploys 5,000 New Cameras in Smart City Security Overhaul
Penang is expanding its CCTV network as part of a wider push to create a smarter, safer urban environment. By October, the state plans to install 5,000 cameras, with 1,000 of these set for Seberang Perai alone. The move comes alongside the launch of a new operations centre designed to streamline city management using advanced technology.
The Seberang Perai ASPIRE Centre (SPACE) will act as the main hub for smart city operations in the region. Led by Dr. Mohamad Fazli Sabri, the centre will use fibre optic networks as its backbone and feature tools like Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) for tracking vehicle movements.
SPACE is expected to enhance multiple services, including traffic monitoring, public safety, and real-time city management. It will also support security agencies by providing live data for crime prevention and enforcement. Beyond security, the system will help detect violations such as illegal parking and improper waste disposal. The CCTV expansion ties into Penang’s broader strategy of using smart technology—like IoT, big data, and AI—to improve urban living. Currently, 11 high-risk areas are already under surveillance through the MBSP city control system. The full rollout aims to strengthen monitoring across the state by the end of the year.
With 5,000 new cameras and a dedicated operations centre, Penang is set to improve security and city services. The system will provide faster responses to incidents while helping enforce local regulations. Officials expect the upgrades to create a more efficient and safer environment for residents.
