Ten Years After Wife's Death: Parents Back in Court - Parents Face Retrial After Daughter’s Death From Untreated Diabetes Complications

A 21-year-old woman with Down syndrome and diabetes died in her sister’s arms in 2016. Prosecutors now allege her parents failed to act as her health worsened, leading to her death from internal bleeding caused by metabolic failure. The case, initially heard in 2019, has returned to court after an appeal. The parents face charges of negligent homicide by omission, while the sister is accused of failing to provide aid. The young woman was born in 1995 to parents who, for many years, cared for her devotedly. However, prosecutors claim that as she grew older, her deeply religious family refused to fully acknowledge her medical needs. Her mother reportedly believed in a miracle cure rather than conventional treatment. In the days before her death, the parents allegedly removed the sensor from her automatic blood glucose monitor. Prosecutors argue that medical intervention could have saved her life, but no action was taken. Instead, they claim the parents abandoned their daughter as her condition deteriorated. The parents were first sentenced to probation in 2019. However, the case was appealed, leading to a retrial at Frankfurt Regional Court. The jury court is now reconsidering the evidence, with a verdict expected in mid-February. The trial centres on whether the parents’ inaction directly caused their daughter’s death. If convicted, they could face serious penalties for negligent homicide by omission. The sister, meanwhile, remains accused of failing to assist when her sibling needed urgent help.
