Who gets into the Opel-Zoo for free? - Opel Zoo turns 70 with record crowds and free birthday perks

Opel Zoo is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year with a series of special events. Founded in 1956 by Georg von Opel, the zoo has grown into a popular destination for wildlife lovers. Visitors can expect new attractions, free entry offers, and a birthday celebration in September.

The zoo officially opened on September 10, 1956, when its supporting organisation was established. Georg von Opel, grandson of Adam Opel, created the facility as a research-focused animal park. To mark the milestone, a large photo frame now stands at the main entrance, encouraging guests to capture anniversary memories.

This year has already brought exciting additions. In March, a reticulated giraffe calf named Kimia was born, followed by the arrival of Kaja, the first elephant calf at the zoo in 57 years, in May. The elephant house has also been updated with a new aquarium and terrarium, now home to elephant trunkfish and elephant shrews.

The zoo's latest census recorded 221 species and 1,741 animals, including recent arrivals like the blue poison dart frog and the iridescent purple glossy starling. Meanwhile, the meerkats have moved into a newly designed enclosure at the former porcupine exhibit. Attendance has also risen, with 648,000 visitors in 2025—a 9.5% increase from the previous year.

To honour the anniversary, the zoo is offering free entry to anyone born in 1956, valid from March 1 to October 31. The celebrations will peak on September 12 with a special birthday event for guests.

The anniversary year has brought new animals, upgraded exhibits, and record visitor numbers. With free entry for those born in 1956 and a birthday celebration planned, Opel Zoo continues to attract crowds while expanding its wildlife offerings. The zoo's 70th year marks another chapter in its long history of conservation and public engagement.
