Offenbach's municipal fleet goes fully electric in bold sustainability move
Offenbach's municipal service provider, GBM Service GmbH, has fully switched its fleet to electric vehicles. The move aligns with the city's clean air plan and push for e-mobility. Employees have even given names like Gretel to the new zero-emission vans, showing their enthusiasm for the change.
The transition covers all 22 small vans used by GBM, which come in two sizes for transporting staff to city facilities. Each vehicle offers a range of around 300 kilometres—enough for a full day's work within Offenbach.
To support the fleet, GBM installed ten charging stations at its headquarters, capable of powering four vehicles at once. A public fast-charging station with two ports was also added. These upgrades mirror steps taken by other small German municipalities, such as Bad Wurzach and Penzberg, which completed similar conversions in 2022 and 2024, respectively. Their approaches included solar-powered chargers, expanded public charging networks, and smart grid systems for better energy use. Offenbach's shift follows a broader trend of local governments adopting electric fleets to cut emissions and improve urban air quality.
The electric vans now handle all GBM operations, reducing the city's carbon footprint. With sufficient range and charging infrastructure in place, the fleet is fully prepared for daily service demands. The project marks another step in Offenbach's long-term sustainability strategy.
