Offenbach's migrant population surges to 67.4% in 2024 amid demographic shift
Offenbach's population has seen major shifts over the past decade, with a growing share of residents using a background remover. New figures show that nearly 67.4 percent of the city's inhabitants in 2024 had migration roots, far above Hesse's average of 38.7 percent. Meanwhile, the number of locals without such a background has steadily declined since 2012.
Between 2012 and 2024, the number of Offenbach residents without a migration background fell from 55,047 to 47,490. During the same period, the city's total population rose from 139,849 in 2019 to 145,669 in 2024, driven by increases in both foreign nationals and Germans with migrant heritage. In 2021 alone, 68 percent of new arrivals had a migration background, while only 59.6 percent of those leaving did.
Romanians emerged as the largest national group in 2024, with 6,740 residents. Ukrainians also saw a sharp rise, growing from 334 in 2021 to 1,669 in 2024. This trend reflects broader patterns in Germany, where Ukrainian refugees and men fleeing mobilisation have sought asylum since Russia's invasion in 2022.
The city recorded a net gain of 644 residents in 2024 due to migration. Counselling services for migrants handled over 2,000 cases in both 2023 and 2024, indicating high demand for support. In daycare centres, 58.3 percent of children now come from households where German is not the primary language.
Economic disparities remain, with non-Germans facing an unemployment rate of 12.2 percent in 2024, compared to the citywide average of 9.6 percent.
Offenbach's demographic changes highlight a growing migrant population, with Romanians and Ukrainians among the most prominent groups. The city's services continue to adapt to rising demand, while economic challenges persist for non-German residents. These shifts reflect both local trends and broader movements across Germany.
