Offenbach's Kaufhof Revitalized as Learning, Cultural Hub
Offenbach's city center is undergoing a significant transformation. The former Kaufhof building is being revitalized into a modern learning, cultural, and community hub. The €12.5 million purchase price is just the start of the €10 million renovation project, which aims to counter vacant retail spaces and create inclusive gathering spots.
The redevelopment is being overseen by Station Mitte GmbH, led by managing director Andreas Herzog. The old department store fixtures, retail spaces, and escalators are being removed to make way for the new. The basement will feature commercial spaces, while the ground floor will house a public café. Retail uses are also under consideration.
The heart of the building will be a state-of-the-art city library, offering innovative programs and digital workstations for students. A large, contemporary event hall is planned for the roof, hosting public cultural events and private commercial functions. The project is set to open by 2026.
The transformation of the former Kaufhof building is part of Offenbach's initiative to revitalize urban centers, which won Hesse’s €1 million Kommunalpreis in 2021. The redevelopment aims to create a vibrant urban hub, countering vacant retail spaces and fostering community engagement.
