Offenbach's January chaos: Speeding, drugs and illegal parking surge
Offenbach saw a busy start to 2024 as local police dealt with a range of incidents in January. Traffic violations, drug offences, and public disturbances kept officers active across the city. Authorities also reported a rise in illegal parking, leading to hundreds of warnings and vehicle removals.
Traffic issues dominated the third week of January, with 2,406 illegal parking warnings issued. Up to 18 cars were towed weekly for causing major obstructions, while 155 vehicles were deregistered that month. A tow truck operation on Bettinastraße caused further delays when it blocked the road while removing a car from a car-sharing spot.
Speeding remained a persistent problem, with police initiating proceedings at 62 locations each week. Cases ranged from 53 to 183 per week, highlighting ongoing enforcement efforts.
Public disturbances also tested local officers. A man was taken into custody after staggering onto the roadway from the market square, while an intoxicated woman kicked a municipal police officer before being hospitalised for evaluation. In a separate incident, the Frankfurt Special Deployment Unit (SEK) was called after a woman threatened to use a firearm during a routine check.
Drug-related cases added to the workload. Police confiscated 33 grams of cannabis and an expandable baton from teenagers outside a supermarket. Meanwhile, a search at an apartment uncovered a significant amount of ketamine alongside an underage girl.
The month's operations included medical assistance, drug seizures, and traffic enforcement. With illegal parking, speeding, and public disturbances on the rise, authorities continue to monitor and respond to incidents across Offenbach. Police have emphasised ongoing patrols and enforcement to maintain public safety.
