Nordmain S-Bahn Project Begins: Trees Felled for Frankfurt Tunnel Construction

The Nordmain S-Bahn project management has entered a new phase with the felling of around a dozen 50-year-old plane trees at Danziger Platz in Frankfurt's Ostend district. This visible transformation marks the start of construction, with Sweco overseeing structural work for the tunnel and underground stations on behalf of DB InfraGO AG.

The project, designed as a dual-track, electrified connection, is part of the Frankfurt RheinMain plus infrastructure program. It is being implemented by the federal government, the state of Hesse, the city of Frankfurt am Main, the Rhein-Main Transport Association (RMV), and Deutsche Bahn AG. The completion of vegetation clearance, which also includes clearing along the existing railway line between Ostpark, Riederstraße, Riederwald, and Frankfurt-Fechenheim, will commence tunnel, station, and track infrastructure work in early 2026. Around 30 trees are being felled near Danziger Platz and Ostparkstraße, with partial closures of Ostparkstraße necessary at times, and the work expected to be completed by October 23.

The Nordmain S-Bahn project aims to provide a direct rail link between Hanau, Maintal, and Frankfurt, with trains running every 15 minutes between Hanau and central Frankfurt from 2032. The two-billion-euro megaproject is a significant step towards improving public transport in the region.
