Transparency with Positive Conclusion of Nord Stream Clarification - Nord Stream 2 Inquiry Exposes Years of Russian Influence in German Politics
The inquiry found that Russian actors spent years shaping political opinion to smooth the way for Nord Stream 2. Their efforts focused on building relationships with key figures in Germany. Meanwhile, the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania handled the project almost entirely at the executive level, with little legislative oversight.
The Climate Protection Foundation MV, a body linked to the pipeline, received €200,000 from the state government. In contrast, Nord Stream 2 AG contributed €20 million to the same foundation. Investigators noted that no clear records exist of specific individuals or organisations lobbying for the project in the state before the foundation’s creation.
During her testimony, Schwesig defended her government’s actions, insisting they followed German foreign and economic policy. However, opposition parties criticised her responses. The Greens and AfD claimed her answers lacked clarity and raised further questions. The CDU went further, accusing her of delaying the inquiry and dodging direct questions.
Transparency International has since praised the investigation for shedding light on foreign influence tactics. The findings are expected to help Germany counter future disinformation and lobbying campaigns.
The inquiry has clarified many details about Nord Stream 2’s political and financial handling. Its conclusions will inform strategies to prevent similar foreign interference in the future. The committee’s full report is scheduled for release in summer 2026.
