New Year’s Day crash leaves driver facing DUI charges after losing control
A serious car crash took place in the early hours of New Year’s Day on the B62 near Bad Hersfeld. A 26-year-old driver from Niederaula lost control of his Audi, leaving the road and colliding with a ditch and a tree. The incident caused injuries and significant damage to the vehicle.
The accident occurred at around 3:30 AM on January 1. The driver, who has not been named in police reports, was travelling along the B62 when he failed to navigate a right-hand bend. His car skidded off the road, hitting a ditch before striking a small tree.
An 18-year-old passenger from Kirchheim suffered minor injuries in the collision. Emergency services attended the scene, though the passenger did not require hospital treatment. The driver, however, was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and was ordered to take a blood test by responding officers. The crash caused roughly €10,000 worth of damage to the vehicle. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The driver now faces potential charges pending the results of the blood test. The road was temporarily disrupted following the collision, though no further injuries were reported. Authorities have reminded drivers of the dangers of impaired driving, especially during late-night travel.
