New Veterinary Chief Battles Puppy Trafficking, Horse Neglect in Ravensburg

Christof Knitz, the new head of Ravensburg's Veterinary Office, has faced several challenging cases since taking office. The office, responsible for combating animal diseases, ensuring animal protection laws, and overseeing food safety, has dealt with incidents ranging from a riding stable fire to organized puppy trafficking.

In March 2022, Knitz's team successfully acted against organized puppy trafficking, rescuing many sick and unvaccinated puppies kept in crowded conditions. However, the office takes serious action only after a long history of non-compliance. Penalties start with verbal instructions, escalating to deficiency reports, orders, and higher fees.

Last Christmas, a horse with a severe untreated eye injury was reported. Despite homeopathic treatment, the horse nearly went blind. The office is investigating this case.

In Autumn 2024, a bakery closed due to a serious cockroach infestation. All food was destroyed, and the bakery is under close monitoring for reopening.

In January 2025, 14 horses and four dogs were rescued from poor conditions. The horses were later auctioned off to cover stabling and feeding costs.

The office also oversees food safety in various establishments. In July 2025, a riding stable fire led to the death of two horses. Investigations are ongoing.

Knitz's deputy, Peter Reithmeier, has been instrumental in these cases. They work together to ensure the welfare of animals and food safety in Ravensburg.

Under Knitz's leadership, the Ravensburg Veterinary Office continues to tackle animal welfare issues and ensure food safety. Despite challenges, the office remains committed to its mission, working diligently to protect animals and maintain high standards in local establishments.
