New leadership for Wiesbaden’s welfare alliance in 2026

A leadership change is coming to the League of Free Welfare Associations in Wiesbaden. On January 1, 2026, the Diakonie Wiesbaden Rheingau Taunus will take over the chairmanship from the AWO Wiesbaden. This transition follows a scheduled rotation that occurs every two years within the alliance, known as the Wohltätigkeitsbündnis Freier Wohlfahrtsverbände Wiesbaden (or Sozialbündnis).

Marcel Hirsch, head of the regional Diakonie, will succeed Bastian Hans as the league’s new chair. The change marks a routine shift in leadership, designed to ensure fair representation among member organisations.

Outgoing chair Bastian Hans reflected on the league’s recent achievements. He stressed its success in safeguarding Wiesbaden’s social security budget, calling it a key priority. Hans also underscored the necessity of stable social structures and the strength of welfare groups working together. Incoming chair Marcel Hirsch has committed to building on this foundation. He pledged to continue the league’s ongoing projects and uphold the shared priorities of its members. The handover will formalise Diakonie’s role at the start of 2026, maintaining the alliance’s collaborative approach to social security in the region.

The transition will see Diakonie Wiesbaden Rheingau Taunus assume responsibility for guiding the league’s initiatives. With the chairmanship rotating as planned, the alliance aims to sustain its advocacy for social security funding and community support. The change takes effect at the beginning of the new year.
