Neu-Isenburg slashes natural gas bills after surprise VAT reprieve
Natural gas customers in Neu-Isenburg will see lower bills in 2024 after a last-minute change to VAT rules. The Bundesrat suspended a planned VAT hike on December 15, keeping the rate at 7% instead of rising to 19%. Stadtwerke Neu-Isenburg has now confirmed it will pass these savings directly to households. The federal government had originally cut VAT on natural gas from 19% to 7% in October 2022 as part of energy relief measures. This reduction was set to expire on March 31, 2024, with the rate returning to 19%. However, the Bundesrat’s recent decision blocked the increase, allowing the lower rate to continue. Stadtwerke Neu-Isenburg had already announced higher gross prices for 2024, assuming the VAT rise would go ahead. Following the suspension, the company will now significantly reduce these prices. Private customers on the isyERDGAS_privat tariff will see notable drops in both the unit price and standing charge. Kirk Reineke, managing director of Stadtwerke Neu-Isenburg, called the decision a welcome surprise. He emphasised that customers would not need to take any action, as the company would automatically apply the current VAT rate. Updated price sheets and further information are now available on the provider’s website. The suspension of the VAT increase means lower energy costs for households in Neu-Isenburg from January. Stadtwerke Neu-Isenburg has adjusted its pricing to reflect the change, ensuring customers benefit from the reduced rate. No further steps are required for the savings to take effect.
