Neu-Isenburg slashes gas prices by 30% but hikes loom for some

Neu-Isenburg Public Utilities has cut electricity and natural gas prices for most customers starting January 1, 2024. The changes bring an average 2.7 percent drop in electricity rates and up to 30 percent lower gas costs for many households. However, some fixed-rate customers will see a sharp increase as their contracts end.

From January 1, 2024, the standard electricity tariff’s gross variable rate falls from 38 cents to 37 cents per kilowatt-hour—a 2.6 percent reduction. Other electricity tariffs will also decrease by between 2.7 and 2.8 percent. The fixed monthly charge for electricity stays the same.

Natural gas prices will drop significantly for most users. The standard tariff’s variable rate decreases from 20 cents to 13.9 cents per kWh, while the fixed monthly charge rises slightly from €18 to €20. Overall, this results in a 28.8 percent reduction. Customers on the isyERDGAS_basis, isyERDGAS_private, and isyERDGAS_commercial tariffs will see around a 30 percent cost cut.

However, those on the isyERDGAS_24 two-year fixed plan will face a nearly 50 percent price hike when their contract expires on December 31, 2023. These customers will automatically switch to the isyERDGAS_private tariff. The utility company will adjust advance payments without requiring any action from customers.

Thomas Friedrich, Managing Director of Neu-Isenburg Public Utilities since 2018, oversees the changes. It remains unclear whether the reduced 7 percent VAT rate on natural gas will return to 19 percent or if the government’s price cap will be extended.

Most households in Neu-Isenburg will pay less for electricity and gas from January. The reductions apply automatically, with no need for customers to intervene. However, those coming off fixed-rate gas deals will experience a significant price jump.
